9 Tips to Find the Best Workout for You

Published on: May 9, 2023

Exercise your options and embrace the joy of trial and sweat!

Finding an exercise routine you genuinely enjoy is crucial for long-term success on your fitness journey. When you love what you do, it becomes a joyful part of your lifestyle, making it easier to stick with it and reap the amazing benefits!

As someone who’s had fitness part of her daily life for the better part of the last 9 years, I can say with certainty that there are still those moments when motivation wanes and tiredness creeps in. That’s when trying something new might be just the ticket to reignite your fire!

I’ve tried most things both at home and at the gym – group fitness classes (cardio, step, weight-based, cycling), HIIT, CrossFit, bodybuilding, yoga, Pilates, boxing, kickboxing, Zumba Strong…maybe more, I’m not sure lol Even at the gym I go to now, we like to switch things up to keep it interesting. Currently, we’re doing higher intensity cardio days mixed in with 3 days of full body splits per week. I’m also trying to get outside more for walks but that can be hit or miss. It’s not a daily habit that I have down pat…yet.

Exploring different exercises not only keeps things exciting but also challenges your body in fresh ways, helping you break through plateaus and discovering hidden strengths you never knew you had!

9 tips to finding the best workout for you that you’ll stick with

Finding a workout routine that you will stick to can be a challenging task, but there are several strategies you can employ to increase your chances of success. Here are some tips to help you find a workout routine that suits you:

  1. Set clear goals: You want to figure out for yourself what you want to achieve through your workouts. Is it improving overall fitness, losing weight, gaining strength, or increasing flexibility? Having a specific goal in mind will give you direction and motivation.
  2. Consider your interests: Choose activities that align with your interests and preferences. If you enjoy dancing, consider trying Zumba or hip-hop classes. If you prefer being outdoors, finding activities like hiking or cycling may be more appealing. When you genuinely enjoy the workout, you’re more likely to stick with it.
  3. Try different activities: Experiment with various types of workouts to find what resonates with you. Attend different classes, try out different sports, or explore workout videos online. This exploration phase will help you discover activities that you genuinely enjoy and look forward to doing. I also want to add here that you should never stop looking for new activities you might like. Even if you tried them before and didn’t like it, go back to it a while later to see if you’ve changed.
  4. Find a workout buddy: Partnering up with a friend or joining a group exercise class can significantly increase accountability and motivation. I was a group fitness instructor so I’ve seen it myself! Having someone to share the experience with can make workouts more enjoyable and provide mutual support and encouragement. Even if you come alone, you will make connections.
  5. Make it convenient: Choose a workout routine that fits easily into your schedule and lifestyle. If a gym is too far away or the class timings don’t align with your availability, it will be harder to commit. Consider home workouts, online programs, or activities you can do during lunch breaks or after work. It’s also a good idea to have some of these activities as your back-up plans. On days when you can’t make it to the gym, make a point to put on your running shoes and head outdoors.
  6. Set realistic expectations: Start with small, achievable goals and gradually progress over time. I’m sure you’ve heard this one many times, but pushing yourself too hard right from the beginning can lead to burnout or injuries, which may make you less likely to continue. Trying to cram a bunch of activities into your calendar may not be the smartest idea. Consistency is key, so focus on establishing a routine that you can maintain in the long run.
  7. Track your progress: Keep a record of your workouts, whether it’s a fitness journal, a smartphone app, or a wearable fitness tracker. Seeing your progress can be highly motivating and help you stay committed to your routine. I have an Apple Watch that I wear all day (for reasons more than just fitness) but I like seeing my rings close when I’ve met my goals, and I wear a heart rate monitor (MyZone) for workouts at the gym.
  8. Mix it up: Avoid getting bored by incorporating variety into your workouts. Alternate between different activities, change up the intensity, or try new classes or workout routines regularly. This keeps things interesting and prevents monotony.
  9. Reward yourself: Celebrate milestones and achievements along the way. Treat yourself to something you enjoy, like a relaxing massage, a new workout outfit, or new shoes (they use up faster than you think). These small rewards can reinforce your commitment and make the journey more enjoyable.

Remember that finding the right workout routine is a personal process, and it may take some time to discover what works best for you. You may not like it at first but one workout isn’t always enough to get you to fall in love with it right away. Be patient, stay open-minded, and listen to your body’s needs and preferences.
