Did you start yesterday? Last week was a short week with the holiday so I’m guessing perhaps yesterday was your day one. 

We’ve all heard it before – “I’ll start my new routine on Monday.” It’s a common saying, often accompanied by an eye roll. But the truth is, healthy habits can begin any day of the week. The change of seasons, especially the transition from summer to fall, provides an excellent opportunity for a fresh start. Let’s delve into three key principles to keep in mind as you embark on your journey towards a healthier you.

Gradual Progression

It’s tempting to want to go from 0 to 100 overnight, but remember that even the most seasoned marathon runners didn’t start by running a marathon on day one. They trained, built up their endurance, and progressed gradually. The same principle applies to forming healthy habits. Begin slowly and steadily. Avoid the risk of burning out or giving up because you’ve made it too challenging for yourself.

Take a moment to assess your goals and set realistic milestones for yourself. Pick something that you CAN DO. If your goal is to eat better, what does that look like? Is it to eat breakfast before heading off to work? Is it packing a healthy lunch so you don’t have to rely on cafeteria/restaurant food? Is it having already prepared vegetables in your fridge that are easy to grab? Small, achievable changes can lead to lasting improvements.

Embrace Setbacks

Don’t sweat the setbacks. If setbacks didn’t exist, we’d all be Wonder Woman kicking butt and winning at life. Know that setbacks will happen and it’s how to overcome them that will decide your success. In the journey towards a healthier lifestyle, setbacks are an inevitable part of the process. Life can throw unexpected challenges our way, just as the end of summer did for me. I eagerly purchased a 10-week workout challenge that I was super pumped to get started, only to be delayed starting it from an accident. Does it suck, of course! But the key is to adapt and do what you can with the time and scenarios handed to you.

Setbacks aren’t failures; they are opportunities for growth and resilience. The key is in how you respond to them. When life throws you a curveball, adjust your plan and keep moving forward. Remember that setbacks don’t dictate your ultimate success; they’re just temporary obstacles on the path to your goals.

Persistence and Patience

Whether you’re beginning a new routine, rekindling an old one, or continuing the healthy habits you cultivated over the summer, understand that success comes with persistence and patience. It’s not about making drastic changes overnight but rather about making consistent, sustainable progress.

Each day is an opportunity to inch closer to your health goals. Celebrate your small victories and don’t be discouraged by occasional setbacks. Remember that even if you indulged in too many summer treats or missed a few gym sessions, you can start fresh today.
