Reignite Your Health Journey: 7 Practical Strategies to Get Back on Track in 2023

This was the year! The year you were finally going to make healthy changes in your lifestyle and habits to become healthier, stronger, energized, etc. And now you’re thinking, “we’re half way through 2023 and I’m further away from my goals than I was in January…crap”. 

Are you someone who set New Year’s Resolutions this past January and don’t even remember what they were? Or did you set good intentions, started off strong and have since abandoned them because life just got too crazy? Or maybe you didn’t really set steps on how to achieve them so you basically just sent out wishes to the universe hoping they’d happen – kind of like wishing you’d win the lottery but never buying lotto tickets (I can tell you with certainty that this plan doesn’t work too great). 

We all start the year with a burst of motivation and a list of resolutions, particularly when it comes to our health. However, as the months fly by, life’s demands often take priority, and our good intentions begin to wane. Perhaps the first half of 2023 was filled with life disruptors, anything from health problems, injury, a busy schedule, a new job, new priorities. You might be more fired up to change now that the nice weather is here, or on the other hand, you might be wrung out and exhausted.

If you’re a busy woman who has fallen off the health bandwagon, don’t worry; you’re not alone! Now that June has arrived, it’s the perfect time to hit the reset button, reevaluate your goals, and rekindle your commitment to your well-being! Let’s explore some practical strategies to help you get back on track for the rest of 2023.

  1. Reflect on your initial intentions:

Take a moment to reflect on the health-related goals you set at the beginning of the year. Remind yourself why those intentions were important to you. Perhaps you wanted to increase your energy levels, improve your mental well-being, enhance your overall quality of life, or like many, lose weight. Reconnecting with the underlying reasons for your goals will reignite your motivation and provide a strong foundation for moving forward.

  1. Start small and set realistic goals:

I can’t stress this enough. I know we just want to jump out of gates, guns blazing, but hear me out. Most marathoners first starting out didn’t find themselves in a marathon on their day 1. They start with a shorter run, maybe even a jog mixed with walking. Start small. When life gets hectic, it’s essential to set realistic goals that align with your current lifestyle (read that word again…CURRENT lifestyle). Avoid overwhelming yourself with lofty expectations that are difficult to maintain, especially if you are quite busy. Instead, break down your objectives into smaller, achievable steps. For example, commit to taking a 20-minute walk every day or have one healthy meal into your routine each week. These manageable changes will gradually build momentum and prevent burnout.

  1. Create a realistic schedule:

As a busy woman, your time is precious, so it’s crucial to prioritize your health amidst the chaos. Evaluate your daily schedule and identify windows of opportunity to focus on your well-being. It could mean waking up 30 minutes earlier to meditate or scheduling a dedicated workout slot during your lunch break. By incorporating these self-care activities into your routine, you’ll find it easier to stick to your goals. It’s like a planned meeting with your boss, but this time, the boss is you. And you can never cancel on your boss. 

  1. Find activities you enjoy:

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle shouldn’t feel like a chore. Instead of forcing yourself into activities that you don’t enjoy, find ways to make fitness and healthy eating fun. Experiment with various exercises until you discover the ones that genuinely excite you, whether it’s dancing, cycling, or yoga. When you’re genuinely enjoying the process, it becomes easier to sustain long-term.

  1. Seek support:

Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who understand the challenges you face and can offer encouragement and accountability. Consider partnering with a workout buddy or hiring a health coach to keep you motivated and on track.

  1. Embrace mindful habits:

Busy lives often lead to mindless routines. By honing in on mindful habits, you can bring awareness to your actions and make conscious choices. Practice mindful eating by savoring each bite, listening to your body’s hunger and fullness cues, not eating in front of screens, and choosing whole, nourishing foods. Incorporate mindfulness exercises into your daily routine, such as deep breathing or journaling, to reduce stress and foster a positive mindset.

  1. Celebrate progress, not perfection:

It’s essential to recognize and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Don’t beat yourself up over the occasional slip-up or setback. Perfection is not the goal; consistency and resilience are. And while I know we’re pretty much programmed into thinking about the negatives – what we haven’t done, how far along we are from our goal, etc., it’s vital to focus on the positive changes you’ve made and how they have impacted your overall well-being. By acknowledging your achievements, you’ll stay motivated to continue on your health journey.

To all the busy women out there who started the year with good intentions but lost their way, it’s never too late. If you’re feeling pressured, frustrated or stressed because you feel like you wasted half the year not amounting to any progress towards your health and fitness goal, stop right there.
