The Power of Partnership: Why You Need Support to Reach Your Goals

Published on: March 27, 2024

I turned 34 last week which got me thinking…when you’re blowing out your birthday candles, everyone knows you’re supposed to make a wish but not tell anyone what you wished for, or else it won’t come true.

Who came up with that rule? Why do our goals have to be kept a secret?

Sure, right now you’re probably not wishing for a Spice Girl barbie anymore, but wouldn’t you think sharing your wishes and aspirations with others would help you achieve them? Even saying them out loud to yourself will help them feel more real.

I believe that in order to be successful in your goals and dreams, sharing them with those you love and support you is a key step. It shouldn’t be uncomfortable to share your goals with others, but for a lot of us it is. We don’t have to do it all alone, and you aren’t going to jinx yourself if you tell someone.

Are You More Likely to Reach Your Goals if You Tell Someone?

Research shows that people who share their goals and wishes are more likely to reach them compared to those who keep them a secret and go about it alone.

Here are a few stats to explain this better:

  • 10% of people who have an idea or goal will go on to complete it.
  • 25% of people who consciously decide they’ll do it, will reach it.
  • 40% of people will achieve their goal when they give it a timeframe/deadline.
  • 50% of people will reach their goal if they plan how they’re going to achieve it with action steps.
  • 65% of people will succeed if they commit to someone they’ll do it.
  • And a whopping 95% of people will reach their goal if they have specific accountability appointments with someone to ensure they stay on track.

Where do you fall into the list? Are you ready to give yourself a 95% success rate?

Whether your goals are related to health, career, finances, or personal development, the importance of having a supportive partner or team cannot be overstated. While self-motivation and determination are crucial, having someone by your side can significantly enhance your chances of success like I mentioned above. Let’s dive into why partnership and support are essential elements on the path to realizing your dreams.

Side note: I’ve gone through phases in my life where I would do my gym workouts in the early mornings before sunrise. Certain times, it was easy to get myself there alone. Now that I go with my boyfriend, it’s easy to depend on him to motivate me but it’s also easy to fall back and justify skipping the gym too if he’s using the early morning to do paperwork, work or if he’s sick.

Same thing if you have a walking partner. If your friend has other plans, will you still go for your evening walk? Or will you skip too because they’re busy? That’s why it’s good to have a back-up plan!

One of the most significant benefits of having a partner or support system is accountability. When you have someone who’s invested in your success, whether it’s a friend, family member, or a professional coach, you’re more likely to stay committed to your goals. Knowing that someone is counting on you and cheering you on on a consistent basis, can provide the extra push you need to stay on track – especially when the going gets tough because we know it always gets tough at some point!

Motivation and Encouragement

We all have days when our motivation wanes, and doubts creep in. During these moments, having a supportive partner can make all the difference. Whether it’s through words of encouragement, sharing their own experiences, or simply being there to lend a listening ear, a supportive person can help you stay focused and motivated, even when obstacles seem insurmountable.

Different Perspectives and Expertise

No one person has all the answers or skills needed to achieve their goals. By partnering with others, you get access to a diverse range of perspectives, experiences, and expertise that can enrich your own journey. This is what I loved about leading group weight loss programs. Sharing challenges, experiences, how to overcome obstacles, sharing things that worked for them, mindset shifts, etc… Whether it’s bouncing ideas or seeking guidance, collaborating with others can help you identify blind spots, overcome challenges, and develop more effective strategies for success.

Celebrating Successes Together

Achieving your goals is a cause for celebration, and having someone to share your victories with can make them even sweeter! Whether it’s hitting a new personal record at the gym, landing your dream job, or reaching a significant milestone in your personal growth journey, sharing your successes with someone who’s been there with you every step of the way can amplify the joy and sense of accomplishment.

Where Can I Find My Own Support Person?

It’s super convenient if you have someone in your house or everyday life to guide you through your goals. But with the magic of the internet, you can find someone almost anywhere. Even groups of people that you can learn from, share with and give/get support too. There’s a multitude of communities on Facebook or through businesses supporting people in doing what you’re setting out to do, or masterminds for business goals. Some can be free or at a cost.

Speaking of cost, that can also be a good motivator for some. If you have skin in the game, you’re more likely to stick with it. Ever joined a free or low-cost challenge group only to give up a few days later? Some people find they stick with their plan and goals if they invest in that plan, group, coach, etc.

One thing I do want to highlight though is to make sure you find the right support person. As much as you love your husband, he might not be the most helpful person to encourage you with some of your goals. And that’s ok – there’s 8 billion other people on the planet!

I also want to mention that your support person/people may change over the course of realizing your goal. It’s normal to outgrow and seek support elsewhere. It may also take some trial and error to find the right support person. Throughout the months in your journey, find what works for you and adjust. I’ve had a few exercise coaches, business coaches, mentors and been part of mastermind groups. It’s essential to shift and find people that are better aligned as you grow and as your goals and aspirations change with you.

The Bottom Line

While it’s possible to achieve your goals alone, having a partner or support system can significantly enhance your chances of success. From providing accountability and motivation to offering different perspectives and celebrating successes together, the benefits of partnering up with someone are invaluable on the journey towards realizing your dreams.
